DADA-101 Lesson 7

Year 1, Week 7

The sky persistently refused to unveil itself as winter was finally consenting to occasionally loosen its grip. Some areas in the clouds had lost their whiteness after months of shielding the sun and the wet snow turned into a slow, mournful rain. It would have been a depressing time of the year, had it not been for the thought that springtime would soon be back.

But the weather didn't affect austere Professor Gount's class in the least as the first-years noted. The curtains were pulled open to allow the weak daylight to discretely creep in so that the collection of framed pictures hanging from classroom 3C's walls opposite to the windows would be favored. There were four of them; each one displayed a magical creature, with its identification on a small brass plate screwed at the bottom of each frame.

"Settle down", commanded the teacher who was standing by the door. "I'll give you sometime later to look at those pictures."

Once everyone seemed to be there, Severus closed the door after having taken a peek in the corridor. Then he stepped over to the stage and behind his desk.

"It is time for a lesson on Dark creatures. Even though it would have been preferable to assign each one of those creatures an individual lesson, I had no choice but to summarize them as we have lots of subjects to cover throughout your tuition. But I do encourage you to read more about them on your own."

He paused and his dark, predatory gaze was immediately able to spot those who would indeed take it further.

"Before I let you go take a closer look, I want you to check the blackboard."

A list appeared there, scripted with his brusque handwriting.

Classification from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

X - Boring

XX- Harmless / may be domesticated

XXX - Competent wizard should cope

XXXX - Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge / skilled wizard may handle

XXXXX - Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate

He gave them time to copy that down and pointed out to the pictures with his open hand.

Gnome

Fire Crab

Gytrash

Bowtruckle

"Your assignment is to choose one of the creatures on the pictures and write an essay on them. I strongly recommend that you at the very least write down the name of those you won't be choosing so you can at least take a look at what they are, either in your spellbooks or at the library. Carry on."

  • Give a distinction for them. (something thats unique to your creature)
